Studies have shown 77% of people impacted by multiple trauma show no diagnosable PTSD following six EMDR sessions
70% of EMDR participants achieved a good outcome in three active treatment sessions
Understanding EMDR
EDMR, Eye Movement Desensitisation, and Re-processing is a psychotherapy method developed to treat individuals who are suffering from:
- PTSD
- Trauma
- Severe anxiety
- Addiction
- Additional emotional conditions
- Variety of mental health conditions
Psychotherapies emphasize specific skill sets and techniques from counseling that will explore mental health issues through personal interaction. EMDR is the perfect psychotherapy that allows patients to access past, hidden memories of traumatic situations or events. It processes them safely and positively safely and positively will resolve mental distresses.
The benefits of EMDR extend beyond PTSD and trauma resolution. Some potential benefits of this therapeutic approach include:
EMDR can help you identify, challenge, and even change the negative thoughts cluttering your mind
Research shows that bilateral stimulation activates the region of the brain associated with relaxation & comfortable feelings
EMDR works by targeting distressing memories and negative thoughts associated with yourself. By identifying them, you learn how to process and heal from them
You don’t have to express every detail of your painful experience. This makes EMDR particularly useful for people who have difficulty talking about their trauma.
EMDR is classified as a brief-psychotherapy. While everyone’s journey is different, 80% to 90% of people report positive results within their first three sessions.
Eye movement desensitization and Reprocessing will generally take place one to two times a week for six to twelve sessions which will take place by a trained professional who will have extensive knowledge and experience in EMDR.
Phase 1: History taking
The therapist uses this phase to understand your entire background history. Unfortunately, this could include traumatic or painful events, memories, and experiences while possibly including your current stressors.
Phase 2: Preparation
Your therapist will begin helping you learn the skills set to deal with your stressful situation and mental health illnesses. This can include learning specific techniques such as mental exercises.
Phase 3: Assessment
Your therapist will encourage you to select a specific traumatic memory to begin working on. You will work to identify several components of the particular memory. Additionally, you may be asked to identify positive beliefs.
Phase 4: Desensitization
While focusing on your specific memory, the therapist will lead you through stimulation sets. This can include tactile taps, eye movement, or auditory tones.
Phase 5: Installation
This phase is all about strengthening the positive belief you initially identified during phase three with your therapist.
Phase 6: Body Scan
Once you have strengthened your positive beliefs, your therapist will ask you to jot down if you have any physical response while thinking about the specific memory and the positive belief.
Phase 7: Closure
The closure is very much as it sounds; it is the opportunity for you and your therapist to discuss the positive steps you have made and how to continue outside of your sessions—learning to integrate them into your daily life.
Phase 8 Re-evaluation
Each session begins with a reevaluation, an opportunity to discuss your current psychological state and whether the current treatment techniques are effective for you.
Many individuals have expressed that they are very curious about EMDR and fear the treatment. EMDR is a focused, goal-orientated effective therapy treatment with the utmost potential to change individuals’ lives for the best. It has been recognized as highly beneficial by the American Psychiatric Association, the Department of Defense, the World Health Organization, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, among other national and international organizations.
Below we have listed some of the best ways to get the most out of your EMDR Therapy:
- Know and understand your support system. When you are beginning to feel stressed or sad, keep in mind who you can completely trust to call and express yourself.
- Practice the skill sets you have learned in therapy outside of your daily life. Try taking just 10 minutes out of your day to practice meditation or breathing exercises.
- Begin a gratitude journal. Life can be highly stressful, and on awful days you may believe that you have no positive but try and find something that you may be thankful for. I can be as little as you were about to eat a nutritious meal, or you were able to get out in the sun and take a walk around the park.
- Take the treatment and your life at your pace. Never feel pressured to speak about specific situations or emotions if you are not mentally ready. There is absolutely no rush.
