Life changing treatment, backed by science
Welcome to Park Mental Health San Diego, where we have experienced trained therapists performing life-changing therapy techniques such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
DBT is the first-line treatment for BPD and has been shown to reduce the need for medications and medical care by up to 90%.
DBT has been found to reduce the rate of suicide attempts by 50% compared to non-behavioral therapy by community experts.
At least 135 million people worldwide will suffer from severe problems with emotion regulation in their lifetime and need DBT.
Understanding Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical behavior therapy is a form of talking therapy, modified from the effective therapy techniques of cognitive behavior therapy. DBT has been specifically formulated to treat individuals who suffer from highly intense emotions.
The aim of DBT is for the therapist to help individuals:
- Thoroughly understand and learn to accept your intense feelings
- Learn vital skill sets to manage those feelings and emotions
- Integrate those new skill sets into your lives which will make positive changes to your life and those loved ones around you
- Distress tolerance
- Mindfulness
The word “Dialectical” refers to an individual trying to understand how two situations, which seem like complete opposites, could both be true. For example, changing your current behavioral patterns and accepting yourself for who you are may feel somewhat contradictory. Dialectical Behavior Therapy will teach you to achieve both of these goals simultaneously.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy would generally involve an hour of one-to-one therapy each week. The therapy techniques have evolved to become an evidence-based psychotherapy approach used to treat many mental health conditions and addictions.
DBT uses three types of therapy techniques to teach individuals four core vital skills to live life to the fullest. Depending on the therapist, they may use various techniques, making DBT so effective. These four essential skills sets are:
Emotional Regulation:
Learning how to regulate your emotions is a vital skill that you will be taught as part of DBT. Individuals will learn to recognize and further accept their feelings when they come without any judgment. Individuals will learn to stop allowing their adverse emotions to take over their lives and then act impulsively at that specific moment and therefore cause any repossessions.
Interpersonal Effectiveness:
Individuals who have or are still learning to regulate their feelings and emotions can further aid them when dealing with conflict while effectively communicating. Together, these vital skills will significantly increase interpersonal effectiveness and interact with others freely.
Mindfulness:
Mindfulness will involve individuals learning to be aware and accepting of what is currently happening around them. This can further aid you in learning to notice and accept your feelings and thoughts without judgment. Living in the moment can have increased positive outcomes for individuals’ awareness of their bodies and how they are entirely in control of their own emotions.
Distress Tolerance:
This skill set involves allowing yourself to feel intense emotions such as grief or anger without further acting impulsively or reverting to old coping skills that would have been highly destructive, such as self-harming or substance abuse.
Living with a mental health illness or addiction makes life much harder to deal with. Reaching out for help is the most challenging step yet; you can become overcome with a range of emotions; however, if you have been considering trying out dialectical behavior therapy, there are a variety of ways to make this specific therapy technique as successful as possible.
One of the most significant indicators to medical professionals to whether an individual will be successful is the willingness to practice and implement the skill sets they have learned out of their therapy session.
Continue to work on yourself while in between therapy sessions. Leaning does not finish once your therapy session is over. You must work hard for yourself every day, continue learning, continue adapting and implementing those vital skillsets into your life.
You need to be 100% mentally committed to practicing the skill sets, not just learning them. It would help if you practiced integrating them into your life until they become part of your natural routine.
You will need to be open with yourself to live and think differently. I can often, in the beginning, be somewhat uncomfortable, challenging, and mentally painful at times, but it will 100% be worth it in the long run.
Learn to trust your loved one and long-term friends who have supported you from the start. Even having a support team, even if it is just one person, having a support team can help you immensely when you are feeling at your lowest. They will be the people who are always in your corner, pushing you and cheering you on to overcome your challenges.
